PMB clubs riding high after good wins

2011-06-30 00:00

THERE is much to smile about in Pietermaritzburg club rugby circles after the victories of Varsity and Collegians in KZN competitions.

Varsity had a good 25-12 win against Harlequins on the campus after leading 15-12 at half-time.

In the first half tries were scored by three-quarters Louis Nondela and Ricky Chirengende. Kirsten Jones added a conversion and penalty. Quins replied with two tries and a conversion.

In the second half Varsity scored a try by loose forward Andre Greyvenstein, converted by Jones, who added another penalty.

“Overall it was a very good performance with Varsity playing some exciting and expansive running rugby,” head coach Beans Bateman told The Witness.

He singled out scrumhalf Zander Engelbrecht and lock forward Gerrit Fourie for special mention.

Bateman said Varsity are up against Old Boys in Durban tomorrow. “

With the game being played in Durban it will be a difficult encounter, but the boys are really looking forward to it.”

Meanwhile PMB Collegians thumped Richards Bay 47-13 and so wrapped up the KZN First Division South competition with a game to spare, which is scheduled to be against Amanzimtoti.

Man of the match amongst Collegians’ forwards was hooker Dylan Pieterse.

“But it was all eight forwards that gave us the platform to unleash the backline,” said Collegians chairperson Tony Day.

The backline man of the match was fullback Tim Mann at 15, “who gets better and better with every game”, said Day.

Collegians also welcomed back Conal Levine at flyhalf and Richard Hayworth at wing, who have both been off with injuries for six weeks.

Day said it has been a successful season and he hopes they can carry the success forward to July 31 when they play North Section winners Vryheid.

The North/South playoffs will take place in Empangeni to determine the KZN First Division champions for 2011.
