PMB honours Gandhi on his birth anniversary

2014-10-03 00:00

INDIA enjoyed a public holiday yesterday to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary and the occasion did not go unheralded in Pietermaritzburg.

Members of the local Gandhi Memorial Committee placed flowers at his statue in Church Street.

Pietermaritzburg is the one place in South Africa that every person in India knows. They are taught about the city from primary school level as this was where Gandhi said his journey as a peace activist started after he was thrown off a whites-only train carriage.

The local Gandhi committee will also be commemorating the Mahatma’s birth anniversary with a peace walk on Sunday.

Marchers will set off from Freedom Square at 1 pm to the railway station where cultural events will be held and meals will be served.

The event will end by 5.30 pm. Transport will be provided for drivers who want to fetch their cars from Freedom Square to take them up to the station where safe parking will be provided.
