PMB mountain biker may win downhill World Cup

2008-09-01 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG downhill mountain bike racer Greg Minnaar is on the verge of winning his third World Cup title after taking his third victory of the season in the sixth leg in Canberra this weekend.

Minnaar beat Australian Santa Cruz Syndicate team-mate Nathan Rennie, regaining the lead of the World Cup by 151 points. He has also won this year in Canada and Scotland.

Minnaar now needs to finish in the top five in Schladming, Austria, on September 13 to win his third World Cup title, having also been champion in 2001 and 2005.

“We’ve been in racing long enough to know not to expect anything until after the final race,” Minnaar’s father, Jeff, said yesterday.

Pietermaritzburg will host the first leg of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup from April 10 to 12, 2009.
