PMB on track to be cycle city

2009-04-13 00:00

After Pietermaritzburg’s successful staging of the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at the weekend, the city has won its bid to host the event for the next three years.

Pietermaritzburg Tourism director Melanie Veness says this bodes well for the city.

“We have proven that we can stage world-class events so we are absolutely thrilled to hear the news. This past weekend’s event was really phenomenal. The weather was perfect, the crowds were great and we had wonderful international support. I couldn’t have scripted a better event myself,” she said.

Msunduzi Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo gave out prizes at Sunday’s award ceremony and said investing in the event proved to be a wise move that would benefit the city’s coffers in the years to come.

“It was a very exciting event that was well attended and the numbers alone were far above what we expected. This event is just going to get better in the coming years,” she said.

Real Events Management head Alec Lenferna said people can also look forward to the upcoming UCI BMX World Cup that will be taking place in August. The city will also play host to the 2010 UCI BMX World Championships, before staging the UCI BMX World Cup for the second time in 2011.

“All of these events are part of the programme to turn Pietermaritzburg into the cycling capital of Africa,” said Lenferna.
