PMB public back party funding bill

2008-11-27 00:00

THE public hearings for the controversial political funding bill began in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

The majority of people who attended the hearing supported the bill, which will see millions of rands go to seven parties represented in the legislature.

Those who opposed the bill said that the money should be used for pressing issues such as fighting crime and creating jobs.

According to the proposal, 20% of the money will be equally divided among the parties and 80% divided proportional to the number of seats they hold and the number of votes they received during the previous general elections.

The parties that stand to benefit from the new bill are the ANC, IFP, DA, Nadeco, MF, UDM and the ACDP.

A call was made during the hearing for the parties not to use the funding to buy votes. The parties are expected to use the funding for promoting democratic participation. The funding is also aimed at discouraging political parties from accepting funding from the private sector, which exert pressure on parties.
