PMB woman loses R14?000 in ‘potion’ scam at bank

2014-12-24 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG woman will have a bleak Christmas after being conned out of nearly R14 000 cash in Standard Bank in Church Street.

Nobuhle Mkhize (32) said she was in a queue when a man asked her if it was possible to deposit money without an ID book.

She told him she’d no idea and he touched her shoulder, then walked away.

A woman behind her then said that she had been smeared with a “potion”.

She suggested Mkhize leave with her to remove the potion as the “money would turn to paper”. Mkhize went with her.

Mkhize said she “felt dizzy” and believes she may have been drugged.

“I could not think straight, and my body was numb and my legs shivering.”

She said she didn’t see anyone do anything to her but her “mind was away”. When she went back to deposit her R13 750, she was shocked to find paper in its place.

Police spokesperson Captain Zenzele Ndlovu confirmed police are investigating a case of theft arising from the incident.

Standard Bank spokesperson Erik Larsen said Mkhize was the unfortunate victim of an elaborate scam.

He said the bank will co-operate fully with the police investigation.
