Pacesetters Standard edge out challengers Zingari

2010-11-17 00:00

THE punted pic of the weekend KZN Inland Premier40 matches turned out to be right on the money, as log leaders Standard endured some anxious moments before edging out title challengers Zingari by 11 runs at Wanderers.

St Charles product Michael Gouweloos top-scored with 46 in Standard’s 174 for eight, leaving former Inland seamer Richard Hlela (four for 22) wishing the number of overs per bowler were unrestricted.

The remarkably prolific Maritzburg College left-hander Nic Hendrie continued his purple patch with 60, as Zingari made a great fight of it in their reply. Hlela capped an outstanding all-round display with 38, but both he and the College lad will be wishing for another four or two to have flowed off their bats.

Promising seamers Tim de la Hey (three for 29) and Marcel Frenzel (three for 28) are just a year out of St Charles and Maritzburg Christian School respectively, and their match-winning performances brought Standard coach Robbie Coutts a good deal of satisfaction.

At Woodlands, Lancashire picked up a solid home win by 37 runs against reigning champions Varsity.

Warren Naidoo led the way for Lancs with a top score of 60 in their handy 186 all out, College leg-spinner Tyler Lortan underlining his impressive recent performances for school and the KZN Inland U19 side with three for 22.

Varsity were toppled for 149 in reply, Lortan the only batsman able to get near the 40-mark.

Home side K&L and premier division newcomers Cosmos were involved in a close tussle in Ladysmith. Duran Ramon’s all-round display for the visitors, added to the important contributions of Nashil Jeewan with the ball and the consistent Stanton Govender and Dinesh Lutchman with the bat, paved the way for a memorable Cosmos victory.

In the remaining match, Midlands kept their title hopes alive with an emphatic 51-run victory, despite Young Natalians player/coach Darryn Mortimer’s efforts.

The pick of this Sunday’s fixtures could be that between Varsity and Midlands at the Varsity Oval.

In KZN Coastal Premier50 action, defending champs Crusaders made inroads into DHS Rhythm’s lead on the log table with an eight-wicket win.

This Sunday’s clash between second-placed Saders at joint-third Berea Rovers could be a thriller, while DHS Rhythm have another potentially tough nut to crack when they take on joint-third Delta at Till Crescent.
