Palmgren credits win over Ajax to ‘happy team’

AMAZULU coach Roger Palmgren has attributed his shock 4-0 win over Ajax Cape Town to the “wonderful happiness and team spirit” he has instilled since taking over from Manqoba Mngqithi last week.

The Durban side claimed their first win of the season at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban, on Tuesday evening.

Palmgren admitted the score was not expected, given that Ajax have been on form.

It was former Urban Warriors man, Stanton Lewis, who did most damage, helping himself to a brace. Fellow marksmen Ayanda Dlamini and Tengani Shipahu also registered their names on the score sheet.

“It was total teamwork,” said the Swedish coach after the game. “We worked together from the goalkeeper to the strikers. We played as a team of 11 players pulling together. Even when we were 2-0 up, the players urged themselves to keep pushing.

“Since I took over, I’ve been trying to instil the little things in the team. Things like the happiness of the players and working for each other, helping each other and not being negative towards each other.”

Ajax Cape Town coach Maarten Stekelenberg put the blame squarely on his defenders. “We were erratic in defence. We did not play so badly in the first half, but we gave away a stupid goal. Even the second goal was due to our own mistakes. We made things difficult for ourselves. We played much of the game against ourselves,” the Dutchman said.
