Pantomime season takes off

2007-11-12 00:00

THIS year's family pantomime presented by KickstArt in association with the Playhouse Company is Aladdin, to be staged in the Playhouse Drama Theatre from November 21 to December 30.

Set in mystical Ancient China, the panto package features a flying carpet, an enormous genie of the lamp, a willow pattern finale and a sparkling cave of wonders full of jewels and dragons as well as all the old panto favorites: popular songs, classic jokes, messy slosh scenes and sing-a-longs to delight young and old.

Aladdin (played by Carol Trench, star of last year's My Fair Lady) will be a sumptuous production with innovative designs by Greg King. The production has been adapted, written and will be directed by Steven Stead, with choreography by Josette Eales and musical direction by Evan Roberts. Stead and King were responsible for both of last year's festive season sell out productions: My Fair Lady and Sleeping Beauty.

Others in the cast include Darren King as the wicked magician Abanazar, Peter Court as Aladdin's addled mother, Widow Twankey, Bryan Hiles as Wishee Washee and Ntando Cele as the sultry genie of the ring. Frances Currie makes her KickstArt debut as Aladdin's sweet-heart, the Princess Jasmine, while Danielle Perleman is her spunky sidekick, Dar Ling. They are supported by a talented, all singing and all dancing chorus.

Shows are at 2.30 pm Tuesday to Saturday, 7 pm Friday and Saturday, and 3 pm on Sunday. There will be no shows on Christmas day or the day of goodwill but there will be a 2.30 pm show on Christmas Eve. Tickets are R80 for adults and R65 for children. Book through Computicket. There are special deals for school groups. Reduced ticket prices for schools are available on November 28, 29 and 30 for the 2.30 pm show.
