Paris master: Berdych beats Anderson to reach quarters

2012-11-02 00:00

PARIS — Tomas Berdych recovered from a poor first set to beat South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 and reach the Paris Masters quarter-finals yesterday.

The Czech was overpowered by Anderson’s powerful serve and strong defence in the first set, where Anderson hit six aces and broke Berdych twice, while saving all three breakpoints on his own serve.

But Berdcyh hit back and broke Anderson in the eighth game of the second set, and in the seventh game of the decider, before clinching the match with a backhand volley at the net. He next plays Gilles Simon, who advanced after 15th-seeded Kei Nishikori pulled out because of a recurrence of his right ankle injury.
