Park Rynie: Gunmen hold up garage

2011-07-15 00:00

TELLERS at the Total Quickshop in Park Rynie were held up at gunpoint by a group of men demanding cash in the early hours of Sunday morning, said police communications officer Captain Vincent Pandaram.

Travis Clarke, the manager, said, “At around 00.45 am on Sunday a couple of guys casually walked into the garage Quickshop and asked for the manager. After being told that there was no night manager, they robbed the tellers at gunpoint, clearing out both tills.”

“The men made off with around R5 500 and two cell- phones of customers.”

The police report said there were six customers at the filling station at the time.

The gunmen, in their late teens and early 20s, took about seven minutes to enter and leave.

“No one was hurt in the robbery,” Clarke said. “However, one of our tellers has been admitted to hospital for post-traumatic stress.”

Police are still investigating. The suspects are still at large.

Pandaram appealed to eyewitness and people who were in the store at the time to call the Scottburgh police.

He urged businesses tht operate after hours to have adequate security in place. “They must make sure that they do not keep large amounts of cash or valuables on hand, and rather use a drop safe and make sure that their security companies conduct regular checkups of the premises.”
