Parliament: ANC puts Move of Govt seat to Pretoria back on Agenda

2011-11-24 00:00

CAPE TOWN —The ANC yesterday put relocating parliament back to Pretoria firmly on the agenda.

A senior ANC MP, Vincent Smith, said during yesterday’s question time in the National Assembly that the seat of government in Cape Town had to be “urgently” relooked at.

“The decision to house the executive, the legislature and the judiciary in seperate places was the result of a political settlement by a white government in 1910,”said Smith, who is the chairman of the portfolio committee on corrective services and lives in Gauteng.

He said the historic decision has lead to unnecessary costs in terms of travel, housing and productivity. Smith asked if, seventeen years after democracy, it was perhaps time to relook at this decision. “Money spent on moving and housing could better be spent elsewhere where it is more needed.” Graham McIntosh, a Cope MP, said should parliament move to Pretoria, the buildings in Cape Town could be used by the Pan-African Parliament.

Pravin Gordhan, minister of finance said travel costs from April to October this year amounted to more than R5 million.
