Paroled man back in custody

2012-10-15 00:00

A 53-YEAR-OLD man on parole from a 22-year sentence for murder is back in custody after being arrested for stabbing two women in a taxi.

Thembinkosi Petros Mbili, who was jailed in 2001, has been denied bail and is due to appear again in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday next week.

In his bail application last week, he said he was on ARV medication, which would be easier to obtain were he not in custody.

Mbili also said he was employed and had three children to take care of and would suffer financial losses sitting behind bars.

Magistrate Karen Scheepers refused him bail, saying he faced a Schedule Six offence and he had not shown any exceptional circumstances.

“You are a very, very dangerous person,” she told him.

“You just stabbed two women in a taxi. Bail is denied.”

Investigating officer Johan Botha, opposing bail, said Mbili, who is from Quinabout, in Gamalakhe, had a previous conviction and a pending case to his name.

“The accused stabbed two women in a taxi in front of other occupants. One has to look at the circumstances surrounding the case,” said Botha.
