Party lists: ‘Give women half’

2010-09-23 00:00

THE ANC Women’s League has proposed that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) should introduce measures to ensure that all political parties contesting elections allow women to make up half the candidates on their party lists.

The proposal is contained in the gender report presented at the national general council being held in Durban.

Women’s league president and Basic Education Minister Angie Motsekga said there are many laws in the country to ensure that women are not discriminated against, but much still has to be done ensure total emancipation.

“The IEC should not accept candidates lists that don’t have 50% women representation.

“It should not be the ANC only that applies that principle …” Motsekga added.

The ANC has adopted this policy to ensure gender equality in public representation, she added.

The gender report reviews the progress made by the ANC towards its commitment to creating a non-sexist society within the organisation and state.

It also seeks to identify shortcomings and propose recommendations to ensure women’s issues and gender equality are mainstream concerns across the organisation.

“Gender inequality and other patriarchy-related social ills are an integral part of what should be the transformation agenda of the ANC … While patriarchy is a distinct system, it does not exist on its own. It thrives on the basic economic-political system under which it exists, becoming a way of life by all. Thus, state or government alone, or one group or organisation, cannot eradicate it,” the report says.

The league also believes the ANC should have a sub-committee on gender, as it had noticed sexist tendencies in the ruling party.

“We used to have that committee and it needs to be resuscitated. We have noticed jokes that discriminate against women and sexist tendencies.”
