Party poster wars spread to Maritzburg

2014-03-19 00:00

POLITICAL parties’ poster wars seem to be spreading.

There have now been complaints in Pietermaritzburg by the Democratic Alliance that the ANC had placed its posters over theirs.

This complaint follows an article in yesterday’s Witness of a similar occurrence in Durban.

As many as 16 defaced DA posters in the Scottsville/Pelham area were reported to the local Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) office and a case of malicious damage to property was opened at the Alexandra Road police station.

DA councillor Vic Winterbach, who sits on the Party Liaison Committee (PLC), made the complaints.

Msunduzi electoral officer, Nick Davids confirmed that he received the complaint and said he had advised the DA to lay a complaint with the police.

The Witness reported yesterday that IEC provincial manager Ntombifuthi Masinga had urged parties to report any defacing or taking down of posters.

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalalala had also said that his party did not condone undermining other parties’ campaigns. He urged affected parties to consult the ANC to find a workable solution.
