Passed on: SA fans mourn Scara’s death

2010-05-12 00:00

AS SOUTH African football fans look forward to the Word Cup in a month, they are mourning the death of fan favourite Emmanuel “Scara” Ngobese.

Ngobese, who made a name for himself while turning out for teams including Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows, died yesterday morning, having suffered from tuberculosis (TB).

His brother, Thabani Ngobese, confirmed Scara’s death on Metro FM last night.

The radio sports show was inundated with calls from football people offering their condolences to the Ngobese family.

Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung and South African Players’ Union secretary Cappy Motutoane praised Scara for the entertainment he had provided for local soccer enthusiasts.

Motaung credited the player for the contribution he made when Amakhosi won the Premier Soccer League crown back to back about five seasons ago.

He said Ngobese was a superbly skilled midfielder who unashamedly expressed himself on the field, whether his team was trailing or ahead.

The Katlehong-born Ngobese last played for United FC, a national First Division side, after stints with Thanda Royal Zulu and AmaZulu.

United FC manager Richard Makhoba said: “We are saddened about the news of Scara passing away. This is a great loss to South African football and we will miss his immense talent in the game.”
