‘Passionate’ Pongola win Keith Parkinson Cup

2012-09-04 00:00

PONGOLA defeated UKZN Pietermaritzburg 18-7 in a tense final in Durban recently to clinch the Keith Parkinson Cup.

Pongola got off to a perfect start when scrumhalf Sydney Coetzee flopped over for the opening try from the back of an unstoppable driving maul to draw first blood. Flyhalf Chris Kok missed the conversion, but slotted a penalty moments later to extend Pongola’s lead to eight before UKZN Pietermaritzburg scored a converted try just before half time.

Following a tense 20-minute period after the break, Pongola captain PC Beyers sparked a spectacular team try when he fielded a wayward kick and launched a counter-attack.

Beyers found plenty of space and found centre Victor Jardim with a cut-out pass. Jardim linked up with fullback Boet Burger, whose final pass saw Joseph Neethling dive over in the corner.

Kok was successful with the touchline conversion and kicked a late penalty to seal the silverware for Pongola. “I’m extremely proud of my team. For four years we have been trying to win this cup and now we have,” said an elated Beyers. “Words can’t describe how it feels to be the captain of such a special team. We played as a cohesive unit and once we built momentum, we were like a well-oiled machine.”

Beyers’s father, Piet, famously captained the club to victory in the same tournament in 1995, making the victory that much sweeter for the skipper. “It’s surreal to think that I’m fortunate enough to lift the trophy 17 years after my father and his team won it.”

Beyers concluded: “We are a very passionate team and town and this win was for the entire Pongola.”
