Pastor escapes death

A DURBAN clergyman insists that it was divine intervention that saved him — narrowly escaping death when a falling tree crushed his car.

Pastor Mlungisi Dlamini (34) had been idly sitting at the side of Bartle Road in Umbilo when a large tree flattened his silver Hyundai i20 yesterday.

While waiting for members of his congregation to meet him, the trunk splintered, and a massive limb fell onto his car crushing the roof above the driver’s seat.

Dlamini, who praised God for saving him, emerged with a concussion — something that medics described as a miracle.

The nearly smitten pastor presides over the Jesus Act of Grace Church.

Speaking to The Witness from his hospital bed, Dlamini said it was indeed the righteous hand of God that had spared him. “I was sitting in the car waiting for other congregants that I was supposed to meet up with,” he said.

“My car was parked on the side of the road and I did not even see where the tree came from.

“When it happened, I didn’t even realise it was a tree, that’s how fast it happened,” he said.

He said he was just grateful to be alive.

“I just want to thank God for saving my life.”

RescueCare Paramedics Garrith Jamieson said that the pastor was lucky to have survived, and while they raced to the scene, they had expected the worst.

“Rescue Care paramedics were called to the scene and expected the worst when they saw the whole tree on top of a vehicle,” Jamieson said.

“They found the driver lying on the roadside after people had pulled him from the wreck. He had suffered moderate injuries and needed medication for the pain due to the injuries he had sustained.

“Once he had been stabilised on scene by Advanced Life Support paramedics he was transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that he required.”

Natal mahogany tree fell on a car he was driving on Bulwer Road.

The branch shattered the roof and windscreen of his white Nissan Sentra, killing him instantly. A tree-felling company had to be called to remove the tree while paramedics battled for hours to remove Erdey’s body from the vehicle.
