Patric Cillers makes excellent recovery to play for Sharks at Loftus

2009-09-11 00:00

PATRIC Cilliers has been passed fit and will pack down at tighthead for the Sharks against the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup match at Loftus tomorrow evening.

Cilliers, who has fought his way back from knee surgery, limped from the field during the game against Boland last weekend and there were fears that a cartilage problem would sideline him for some time.

But he has made an excellent recovery and yesterday John Plumtree included the young prop in his starting line-up with U21 player Julian Redelinghuys providing cover off the bench.

Plumtree has also selected Charl Mcleod ahead of fit-again Rory Kockott at scrumhalf and centre Andries Strauss returns for Waylon Murray at centre in the only change to the team which started against Boland last Friday.

Murray, after his extended injury break, which saw him miss the entire Super 14, is denied by the consistent form of Riaan Swanepoel and Andries Strauss in the Sharks midfield.

The combative Kockott is also fighting his way back from a shoulder injury and patchy form and in recent weeks McLeod’s snappy service at the base of the scrum has been a feature of the Sharks’ improved backplay and he is preferred. Both Murray and Kockott are on the bench.

This will be the Sharks’ last game this season before their nine Springboks return following their Tri-Nations tour to boost them for the remaining four games against Free State, the Leopards and the Lions (all in Durban) and Griquas (in Kimberley).

The log-leading Sharks would almost certainly nail down a semi-final spot with a win tomorrow while the Blue Bulls, after two successive losses, need a victory to resurrect their Currie Cup campaign.

The match at Loftus kicks off at 5 pm and Jonathan Kaplan will referee the game.

Western Province coach Allister Coetzee has made only one change to his side for the clash against Free State in Bloemfontein tomorrow, with former Blue Bulls centre Frikkie Welsh replacing the injured Morgan Newman. Free State coach Naka Drotske has promoted SA Sevens speedster Lionel Mapoe in place of JW Jonker on the right wing, while Bok centre Meyer Bosman is back after nine weeks with a broken hand .

There will be two Currie Cup matches tonight with the Lions hosting the Leopards at Ellis Park (7 pm) and Griquas travelling to Wellington to play Boland (at 3 pm).

Sharks team:

15 Stefan Terblanche (c), 14 Chris Jordaan, 13 Andries Strauss, 12 Riaan Swanepoel, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Juan Hernandez, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Keegan Daniel, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Jacques Botes, 5 Albert van den Berg, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Patric Cilliers, 2 Craig Burden, 1 Deon Carstens

Replacements: 16 Skipper Badenhorst, 17 Julian Redelinghuys, 18 Alistair Hargreaves, 19 Michael Rhodes, 20 Rory Kockott, 21 Monty Dumond, 22 Waylon Murray
