Paving project to end in July

2013-06-14 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG residents have until the end of July to suffer for the sake of beauty.

That is when the upgrade and paving of Chief Albert Luthuli Street, outside the city hall, is expected to be completed.

Residents have been frustrated by the road closure and the traffic logjam that it has caused in the central business district (CBD).

Councillor Bill Lambert sneaked in a question about the urban upgrade during discussion on a youth initiative that wanted to get involved in a city centre clean-up campaign and had asked for some support from council.

Lambert said that anything to contribute to the rejuvenation of the CBD was money well spent. “By the way,” he asked, “when is the project outside city hall due for completion?”

Municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi told him the road would be re-opened by the end of July. Nkosi said the entire urban renewal project that involved the beautification of the CBD would be completed by 2016.

He added that this was the only aspect of the work that would involve a road closure. The rest of the paving would be for pedestrian walkways and although there would be some inconvenience, it would not be like the current situation.
