2012-09-19 00:00

The granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi and former ANC MP Ela Gandhi presented the 2012 Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation to former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda.

The award, made by the Gandhi Development Trust (GDT), recognised Kaunda’s efforts to end the oppression of the people of Zambia and South Africa and for his continuing work in building peace in Africa.

Looking on is GDT executive member Vasu Gounden.

Six liberation war heroes were honoured with the Mahatma Gandhi Satyagraha Award, which recognises individuals who have made tremendous sacrifices in the quest for freedom in South Africa.

This year the recipients are the late Black Consciousness Movement founder, Steve Biko, the Reverend Sue Brittion, John Langalibalele Dube, Denis Goldberg, Mewa Ramgobin and Justice Zak Yacoob.

Promoting non-violence, peace, reconciliation and human rights is part of GDT’s mission.

The awards were created in 2003 on the centenary of Gandhi’s newspaper, the Indian Opinion. The awards honour people who have surmounted religion and ethnicity to promote democracy, peace and justice through

non-violence.
