Peace pillar to be erected in PMB

2011-02-28 00:00

WHAT is the tall structure firmly wrapped up, standing in the Carbineer Gardens next to the City Hall and when is it going to be unwrapped? These were some of the questions raised by curious Maritzburgers driving along Chief Albert Luthuli Road in the city centre.

The object of everyone’s curiosity is a four-ton granite peace pillar, inscribed with prayers from the world’s major religions that will stand 3,5 metres high.

It is to be unveiled in March. A sod-turning ceremony was held earlier this month on the spot where it will stand. The structure is one of eight being erected in KZN with another four being erected elsewhere in South Africa and abroad.

The project is the initiative of businessman Ishwar Ramlutchman to commemorate the founder of the Divine Life Society worldwide, Swami Sivananda, and his disciple in SA, the late Swami Sahajananda.

KZN heritage body Amafa has given the initiative its backing. After Pietermaritzburg, pillars will be erected in Greytown, Durban, Cape Town and Mpumalanga. One will stand in Swaziland and another in Chennai, India.
