Pelham's mystery commotion

2010-08-27 00:00

MYSTERY surrounds the cause of a commotion in Pelham in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Christie Road resident Cherri Canon told The Witness she was awoken by the voices of a group of people chanting and singing at around 1 am. This was followed by the noise of sirens and then bangs that she said sounded like gunshots.

Canon said it was difficult to pinpoint exactly where the noise was coming from in the area.

“I heard vehicles driving up and down. It sounded like it was coming from the area near Oribi Road. I could hear it very clearly.”

Canon said it was suggested to her that the commotion came from a crowd returning from a football match at Harry Gwala Stadium, but this could not be confirmed. A resident of Risley Road also reported hearing a couple of gunshots and expressed surprise when she was told that police knew nothing of the incident.
