Pennington’s Eco Easter Festival — six days of fun

2011-04-12 00:00

THE Positive Pennington team, a group of businesspeople, have worked long and hard over the past six months to bring a vibrant Eco Easter Festival to the town that is rated by many as the South Coast’s best-kept secret.

This incubation has given the committee the opportunity to hone the programme to a polished perfection and is about as final as it can be two weeks before the event. It offers a six-day fiesta of fun running from Good Friday, April 22, to Freedom Day on Wednesday, April 27.

Good Friday sees the holding of the Easter Earth Matters, in which schools will parade from the Tea Gardens to Relton Hall, displaying posters that they designed and made for judging at the finish. Relton Hall will also host the entry-free Water Wise Expo, offering shopping and food and an exhibition of gardening with water ideas.Pennington Conservancy will show examples of invasive plants and offer advice about dealing with them.

On the Saturday, the Easter Animal Kingdom will start at 7 am with complimentary coffee and rusks at the Environmental Centre in the Umdoni Park Forest, with a guided tour accompanied by Pennington Conservancy volunteers. Entry is R10.

Relton Hall will host the Castle Lager Potjiekos Competition with a beer garden and potjie food for sale. Entry forms will be available from Saverite. Spot prizes and a chance to win hampers will be offered at the beer tent from 2 to 10pm.

On Easter Sunday, the Easter Sea to Shore starts with a sunrise church service on the main beach. Impithi Kiosk will be open for coffee.

At 10 am, complimentary transport will convey participants to nearby Umdoni Point, where Super Sport’s Inside Angling presenter, Craig Thomassen, will give a “shore walk and talk”. At 4 pm, a sand castle competition at the Ski Boat Club beach will be followed by a fish braai. Booking essential through Ruth at 071 123 5902 or Pam Thomassen at 084 563 4635.

On Monday, April 25, the Easter Tourist Treasure Hunt will be held, with entries at Relton Hall from 9 am. The route will cover many Eco Tourism sites and offer loads of fun for the whole family. At Relton Hall, Rural Rumours will be in full swing from 11 am, presenting Zulu art and craft and performances by local Zulu choirs and dancers.

On the Tuesday, a fresh produce and food market will be hosted at Relton Hall. This will include the Celebrity Chef Cook-off with tickets at R30 from Pick n Pay. Standing tickets will be for sale at the door for R10. The chefs will be spin bowler Pat Symcox and Afrikaans singer and songwriter Steve Hofmeyr.

The day will end with picnic hampers (booking essential) and a bonfire on the beach — weather permitting. Book your picnic hamper with Karen at 084 405 3646.

The Wednesday features Easter Reduce, Re-use and Recycle with the RRR flea market and car boot sale from 8 am at Relton Hall. All re-used and recycled products are welcome with car boot space selling at R30 a car. The Pennington Conservancy will be launching phase two of its recycling programme from 10 am.
