Perera guides Hyderabad to victory against Trinidad

2013-09-25 00:00

THISARA Perera produced a fantastic all-round performance to guide the Sunrisers Hyderabad to a four-wicket victory over Trinidad & Tobago in their Champions League T20 Group B match at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali yesterday.

Perera smashed an undefeated 57 from just 32 balls with four boundaries and four sixes to guide his team to 164 for six, with three balls remaining, in reply to Trinidad’s 160 for eight after Shikhar Dhawan had won the toss and sent the Caribbean side in to bat first.

Perera came to the crease at the fall of JP Duminy’s wicket at the start of the 10th over, when Duminy had been run out for 17 and the score on 70. At that stage, the Sunrisers were behind the asking rate, which was just over nine runs to the over.

Perera added 25 runs for the fourth wicket with Hanuma Vihari (13) before a 47-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Darren Sammy (15) put the debutants back on track.

With just 21 required off the final three overs, Sunil Narine (4-1-9-4) grabbed two wickets in as many balls when he dismissed Sammy and then Ashish Reddy. But Perera and Karn Sharma (13 not out) guided the Sunrisers home.

Earlier, Darren Bravo scored 66 off 44 balls with five fours and four big sixes and shared in a 61-run partnership with Jason Mohammad (19) for the third wicket.

Perera claimed 2-26 in his four overs with Ishant Sharma (4-0-36-2) and Sammy (4-0-21-2) providing the support needed in restricting Trinidad to 160.

Dale Steyn provided the initial spark for the Sunrisers, removing Lendl Simmons with the first ball of the match.
