Petite Pixie wows ‘Idols’ judges in Durbs

2009-01-08 00:00

Durban’s Pixie Bennett is on her way to becoming a superstar.

The petite travel agent from Morningside was the first person at the Durban Idols audition to get a “golden ticket” to the Idols top 100.

Still shaking after getting four thumbs up from judges Mara Louw, Dave Thompson, Gareth Cliff and Randall Abrahams, Bennett said she is ecstatic about being chosen. The panel loved her confidence and made comments about her personality.

Bennett, who went to boarding school in Howick, was given the name Pixie by friends at university and now uses it as her stage name.

“It’s amazing. I can’t believe I made it through. I was sceptical about entering, but now I’m glad that I did,” she said.

The soft-spoken blonde sang California Dreaming. Before she wowed the judges with her voice, she told them that she had given the song a “jazzy feel”.

Bennett, who is the lead singer in the Pixie Bennett Band, said her friends and family motivated her to enter the competition.

“I love performing. Being on stage singing for others makes me really happy. Our band does a lot of original songs, but we try and put our stamp on it,” she said.

She admitted she was nervous about facing the panel.

“It was nerve-wracking, but the judges were happy with me. That’s great, now I’m looking forward to the Top 100 auditions,” she added.

She said she would be celebrating her achievement with friends and family over drinks.

“I can’t wait to share the good news with everyone including my boyfriend who is in Malawi at the moment,” she said.
