Petrol price up, may fall in June

2012-04-26 00:00

ANOTHER increase in the price of fuel was announced yesterday, but there could be some relief for motorists who have been reeling under the impact of monthly hikes since February.

The Department of Energy said the price of petrol would increase by 28 cents a litre next Wednesday.

This follows hikes of 34 cents a litre in February, 28 cents a litre in March and 66 cents a litre earlier this month.

The latest hike will see the price of a litre of 95 unleaded petrol on the coast increase to about R11,87 cents a litre.

The wholesale price of diesel with a 0,05% sulphur content will rise by 9,4 cents a litre.

Diesel with a 0,005% sulphur content will increase by 8,4 cents.

The department said the single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin would go up by 12 cents a litre,

Economist Mike Schussler of economists.co.za told The Witness that the price of petrol was expected to drop over the next two months.

He said this was due to Northern Hemisphere countries entering the summer months.

This is traditionally a time of low energy demand in the North, signalling the possibility of lower prices.
