Phaku takes Illovo honours with emphatic win

2009-12-15 00:00

THUBALETHU Phaku took the honours in the final road race-off this year by covering the tough hilly Illovo 15 km Christmas challenge in 47 minutes 51 seconds.

By selecting his races Phaku remains the leading short distance specialist in the province and used his strength on the hills to break free off the Bluff Meats Formula One duo of Ticha Matende and Mariyaradi Jari with a lead of over 300 metres at the finish.

A final push by Matende secured second in 48:46, while Jari was the first junior with clubmate Joseph Mendizha just off the pace taking the 35-39 age group in 49:33.

Boxer athletes Peter Sehloho and Nicholas Dlamini topped the 40 and 50 age groups respectively.

The end-of-season break will be a blessing for the provinces’ leading ladies who take to the race tracks virtually every week. This week was no exception with Jenna Challenor once again the clear victor, taking 57 minutes and 57 seconds for the single lapper.

Danelle Adlam was just under two minutes adrift with 35-year-old Janene Carey filling the final podium place.

With a clean sweep of the top three it was not surprising that the Boxer club took the ladies team prize. By comparison it was strength in depth that gave the Mr Price club victory in the men’s team competition. However, the Nedbank club, who has only provided occasional podium placers this year, won the special award for the first club to place 10 runners across the finish line with less than 30 seconds separating them. This “minibus” award is a tradition in the Illovo event, which also gives recognition to the Friendliest Bus. Clubs adopt a theme and run together sharing the holiday spirit with runners and spectators. Toti Athletic club were adjudged the best in this category this year.

The event attracted over 2 000 entries and saw 1 890 people finish in under three hours, making it one of the biggest fields of recent years, again emphasizing the sort of benefits that could accrue to both the organisers and the sport were the fixture list more selective in the number of races on offer.
