Phone ‘had murder info’

2015-03-21 00:00

CAPE TOWN — A cellphone that police can link to the murder scene of the Van Breda family in Stellenbosch was used to research an axe murder committed in the U.S.

The cellphone was allegedly used shortly before the Van Breda murders for Internet research of the axe attack on Peter and Joan Porco in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in November 2004.

Christopher Porco, then 21, attacked his parents with a fireman’s axe. His father died at the scene, but his mother survived albeit with a maimed face.

According to police sources, cellphones and computers were forensically examined after the Van Breda murders and evidence was found that the cellphone was used to research the Porco attack. The phone’s user also looked up information on how long it takes for a person to bleed to death.

The forensic investigation allegedly reveals that the cellphone was used both on the night of the murder and on the following morning to gain Internet access.

Martin van Breda (54), his wife Teresa (55) and their oldest son Rudi (22) were murdered on the night of January 26 in their Stellenbosch home.

Marli van Breda (16) was hit on her head with an axe and her jugular vein was sliced by a knife. She is being cared for in a private rehabilitation centre. Henri van Breda (20) survived the attack and is living with family in Cape Town.

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk declined to comment.

After two months, no one has yet been charged with the murders.
