Photo portrait of Madiba sells for record R2?million

A PORTRAIT of former president Nelson Mandela, which was shot by Adrian Steirn for the 21 Icons South Africa project, has been bought by a private collector for a record sale price of $200 000 (about R2 million).

The money will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and WWF.

Steirn’s portrait depicts Mandela’s face reflected in a mirror. “I wanted Madiba to hold a mirror so that we could see a man reflecting on his life. As he reflects on his life, we reflect on his legacy and our future,” the photographer said.

The first of 21 signed portraits of iconic South Africans unveiled during the debut season of the three-year project, it was bought by a New York art collector, who said: “I am honoured to own what has already become an iconic image of one of the greatest statesmen the world has ever known”.

The remaining 21 Icons portraits, including those of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and F.W. de Klerk, will be auctioned in March 2014. The proceeds will be donated to a charity of each icon’s choice.
