Pile-up on Town Hill, baby critical

2009-08-01 00:00

AN accident that left an eight- month-old baby with critical head injuries after a family car went out of control on Town Hill resulted in an 11-car pile-up yesterday afternoon that took more than an hour to clear.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha, who witnessed the accident, said the car, with a family of six, slammed into an embankment about 100 metres from his vehicle just after 5 pm. The baby and two other children were thrown out the car as it overturned.

“The eight-month-old baby sustained critical head injuries. The other two children, who were around two and six years of age, sustained serious injuries,” said Botha.

Their mother and grandmother also sustained serious injuries, while the driver sustained minor injuries.

While paramedics were treating the family, a cash-in-transit van crashed into the same embankment.

According to the head of the SAPS collision unit, Captain Dolf Otto, the accident caused a chain reaction, with 10 other vehicles rear-ending each other. There were no serious injuries in the pile-up.
