Pinetown man shot dead in execution-style killing

2014-06-05 00:00

A PINETOWN man was shot eight times in a execution-style killing in Westmead yesterday as his terrified brother looked on.

According to sources close to the investigation, this had been the third attempt on his life.

Police have yet to release the identity of the victim until his family have been formally notified.

It is understood that the man had been walking on Surprise Road with his brother when they noticed that they were being followed. A confrontation ensued and one of the assailants is believed to have fired 11 shots at the man, eight of which struck him in the torso. In the hail of bullets, the men wrestled with their attacker who dropped his weapon and fled.

The victim’s bloodied body lay slumped at the roadside, as he succumbed to his injuries long before paramedics arrived at the scene.

Chalk circles denoted the placement of spent bullet cartridges which were strewn about the sidewalk and road near where the man was felled.

His brother insisted that he was too traumatised and could not speak to the press.

According to a police source close to the investigation, who could not be named as they are not authorised to speak to the press, the man’s brother raised the alarm.

“He [the brother] made the call to the police who responded and found that the man had been fatally wounded. He informed us of the previous attempts on his brother’s life as part of some grudge,” the source said.

The source added that the slaying of the man looked like a hit.

“No valuables were taken and the victim was shot repeatedly before the perpetrators fled, this has all the tell-tale signs of an execution.”

The gun recovered at the scene would be sent of further ballistics testing, according to the source.

“The serial number had been filed off but the spent cartridges and the projectiles themselves will be tested at the criminal records centre in Amanzimtoti,” he said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring confirmed that the man had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and had died at the scene.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said, “A 30-year-old man was walking with other people when they were approached by two suspects. It is alleged that one of the suspects produced a firearm and fatally shot the victim eight times.

“The suspects fled the scene on foot after the incident. A firearm believed to be used during the shooting was found at the scene.

“No arrest made and a murder case is being investigated,” Zwane said.
