Pinetown win both Challenge T20 League A matches and go to top of the log

PINETOWN Cricket Club continued their winning ways in the Challenge T20 League A at the weekend, winning both matches to top the log.

In the first two of four round-robin clashes, they brushed off the challenge of Railways and East Coast Cricket Club, maintaining their winning momentum after securing the Challenge League Stream 1 50 over title a few weeks back.

Saturday afternoon saw the Pinetown team travel north to meet Railways, where they were asked to field after the hosts won the toss.

Seamers Kyle Gilham (2-17) and Ruben Naicker (3-24) struck early, putting Railways under pressure from the start.

However, Navelesh Naidoo, batting at number seven, wielded the willow to good effect, scoring an undefeated 48 to enable his side to finish on 128-8 in their 20 overs. He hit some lusty blows, clearing the ropes more than once.

Pinetown’s openers went cheaply, giving Railways the belief that it could perhaps be their day, but Pinetown’s youngsters stepped up to the mark to finish the job and take the points.

SA U19 batsman Greg Oldfield (35*) and SA Colts player Jason Oakes (68*) repaired the damage and ensured there was no further cause for alarm, taking Pinetown across the line to win by eight wickets.

On Sunday, East Coast proved no match for a rampant Pinetown side who cruised to a 104-run victory.

Batting first, Pinetown smashed a more than useful 153-3 in their allotted overs after three quick wickets up front left the middle order to do the job.

Lead by Grant Romeril (67*), order was soon restored and he received solid support from Scottish U19 star Kyle Stirling (32) and Grant Olivier (20*).

Gilham again struck early on his way to 2-5, with Oldfield chipping in at the other end with 1-18. But, it was Romeril’s day and he could do no wrong. Having done the business with the bat, he produced match-winning figures of 4-14 in three overs to destroy the East Coast batting that never looked a threat.

Off-spinner Quinn Jones got in on the act with 3-14, wrapping up the East Coast effort for just 49 and a comprehensive win for Pinetown.

This great start puts Pinetown on top of their group standings with eight points from two matches, above Railways on the same number of points from three games. Umzinto (4 pts), East Coast (4 pts) and Umlazi (0 pts) make up the rest of the pool.

This Sunday, it’s a double header at Lahee Park as Pinetown continue riding their wave of confidence against Umlazi and Umzinto.

With 18 teams split into four pools, the top team from each pool at the end of the round-robin stage progresses to the semi-final. At this point, it looks as though Pinetown will lock horns with rivals UKZN at that vital part of the competition, the students topping their pool after two matches.

If all runs true to form and the showdown materialises, it should be one to savour as the two sides were at each other’s throats throughout the 50-over competition, Pinetown winning the title by a single point after UKZN suffered a shock loss to Hillary Malvern in the final straight of proceedings.
