Pirates’ hard work and persistence pay off against Chippa, as Usuthu crush Wits 3-1

2015-03-11 00:00

ORLANDO Pirates registered their first victory against Chippa United as they beat them 2-0 courtesy of Mpho Makola and Sifiso Myeni’s goals in the first half at the Orlando Stadium last night in their Absa Premiership match.

In the sixth minute Pirates scored their first goal courtesy of Mpho Makola who headed the ball home from Sifiso Myeni’s right wing cross, 1-0.

In the 14 minute, Chippa vice captain Mbenyane dished a good pass to Akpabio who made a good run before his shot from the edge of the box struck the side netting.

In the 21st minute Pirates came close to doubling their score when Kermit Erasmus found himself inside the box and his shot went inches away from the far post.

Pirates continued to attack and dominate the match as Chippa United were put on the back foot.

Hard work and persistence finally paid off for Pirates when Sifiso Myeni netted the second goal to see his team leading by 2-0 in the 27th minute.

As much as Chippa tried to get a goal before half time, things did not go their way as the match went to break with Pirates in the lead.

In the second half, it was the visitors that looked more determined to score as they pressed Pirates hard.

Thabo Matlaba nearly came close to scoring for Pirates in the 52 minute, but his shot missed the target.

Zimbawean defender Chipeta tried to test the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper with a shot from range, but unfortunately it went over the cross bar.

Former AmaZulu goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela pulled a brilliant save off, denying Erasmus a goal inside the box in the 78th minute.

The arrival of Thabo Rakhala changed the pace of the game completely as Pirates pressed hard towards the Chippa United box and if it was not for Mzimela many goals would have been scored.

The last effort for Pirates came in the 88th minute when Myeni tried to dribble past four Chippa defenders, but Okwuosa pulled a good stop.

This saw Pirates collecting three points and moving in to the second spot of the Absa Premiership log.

Last night’s results

AmaZulu 3 - 1 Wits

Orlando Pirates 2 - 0 Chippa United.
