Pitbull official suspended?

2011-07-06 00:00

THE rumour mill was abuzz yesterday with allegations that Terry Scheffermann, Msunduzi Municipality manager for consolidated billing and a member of the Operation Pitbull team, has been suspended on allegations of fraud and corruption.

City Hall insiders and municipal sources, who spoke to The Witness on condition of anonymity, said Schefferman’s suspension was effected yesterday.

Msunduzi administrator Sibusiso Sithole would not confirm or deny this when contacted yesterday.

Sithole said he will meet acting municipal manager Thokozani Maseko today and that they might comment afterwards about developments surrounding Schefferman.

The Witness reported last week that Scheffermann was asked to explain why he should not be suspended.

Scheffermann could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has questioned claims that several more high-ranking municipal officials are linked to fraud and corruption within the municipality.

“While the DA welcomes Cogta’s efforts to root out maladministration within Msunduzi there appears to be a never-ending stream of serious allegations and counter-allegations against officials. We believe these are matters that should have been addressed prior to [Johann] Mettler being recalled and we remain concerned by Cogta’s ability to unearth and then deal with these claims once and for all.

The DA’s spokesperson on co-operative governance, George Mari, said, “The MEC needs to act and initiate an independent audit, as witnessed within eThekwini.

“This is the only way forward for Msunduzi.” — WR.
