Pixie and Jason impress even ‘Idols’ sourpuss

2009-02-23 00:00

Both of our home-grown Idols hopefuls impressed the judges on last night’s show — in fact, both even got good feedback from Idols sourpuss Randall Abrahams.

Pixie Bennett (25), one of two former Howick High pupils to make the top 14 of season five of the show, gave an energetic performance of Amy Winehouse’s Valery on yesterday’s live M-Net broadcast.

Bennett, who admits to being a big fan of the troubled singer, sported a black and white ’60s retro outfit, red heels and a version of Winehouse’s signature beehive hairdo.

Most of the judges questioned her choice of song, but none could deny her stage presence — and great voice. Abrahams even went as far as to say that hers was the best performance he has seen at the point of the show “by a long stretch”.

Jason Hartman (29) also got good feedback from the judges for his performance of James Morrison’s Undiscovered.

Most of the judges also did not like his choice of song.

Gareth Cliff said that although Hartman’s performance was good, he needs to make song choices that will make him more memorable.

“Everyone here is competing for the audience’s attention,” he said.

Abrahams, however, thought that his choice of song was clever — given Morrison’s popularity with women.

Judging by yesterday’s feedback, it looks like our Idols locals are safe until the next round.

But it is no longer up to the judges to decide their fate. Fans need to vote to insure that their favourite Idol stays in.

Catch this week’s results tonight at 7 pm on M-Net.
