Plantastic: Orchid named after local girl

2012-12-06 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG teenager’s name will be immortalised in the form of a beautiful flower.

Emma Jane Eikenaar recently had a hybrid orchid named after her.

The news came after the plant fanatic won a competition run by the Rustenburg Orchid Society through SA Garden magazine.

Emma (13) not only had her name immortalised, but also received 10 orchids valued at R50 000.

She told The Witness: “I am very excited about having something named after me that will go down in history.”

Her plants were delivered a few weeks ago. She decided to keep five and give the others away: two to her grandmothers, two to her best friends and one to her aunt.

She said she had always been fascinated by the beauty of plants, especially orchids.

“It shows me a creation of God,” said Emma, who has just passed Grade 7 at Maritzburg Christian School.

She told The Witness she would like to become a horticulturist one day.

Tinus Orbeholzer, of the Rustenburg Orchid Society, said Emma’s accolade was a rare honour.

Only a few South Africans, including former president Nelson Mandela and President Jacob Zuma, have had orchids named after them.
