Plastic pachyderm has motorists worried

2014-09-04 00:00

FOLLOWING the public outcry caused by the death of a giraffe on Gauteng’s N1 highway, a motorist was quick to tweet photos of a “dead elephant” yesterday.

The animal was carried on the back of a truck on the N14 highway. A mystified @1NORMANSTYLES1 sent a photo of the elephant to sister paper Beeld asking if this was a real elephant travelling in the direction of Pretoria on the N14.

Rick Allan, MD of the Tshwane SPCA, said this time it was not a real animal, although he also thought it was a real elephant when he looked at the photo. A few calls later however revealed the pachyderm is plastic, modelled in realistic detail to be used a prop in a movie being filmed in Krugersdorp. Value Logistics had been contracted to transport the life-size model from Muldersdrift to Krugersdorp.

The gaffe with the giraffe that sparked the concern happened last month, when a bridge over the N1 cracked a giraffe bull’s head as it was being trucked — facing backwards — to Pretoria.
