Players to give all for Wildebeest XV

2013-05-03 00:00

THE first round of the Ebbo Bastard Trophy takes place on Saturday and the Midlands Marauders will tackle defending champions Durban XV at 3 pm at Woodburn Stadium.

The trophy is named after the respected former Natal player and administrator Ebbo Bastard, and the competition is between the five sub-unions of the umbrella body for rugby in the province, the KZN Rugby Union.

The Midlands Rugby Sub Union (MRSU) play as the Midlands Marauders and the players come from the likes of the UKZN Maritzburg, PMB Collegians, Voortrekker Old Boys and PMB Waratahs clubs and teams.

“The Marauders should have a competitive side to play against Durban,” MRSU president Piet Herbst told The Witness yesterday. The Marauders’ head coach is UKZN mentor Shawn van Rensburg and the team manager is Woody Newman.

The Durban team is made up of KZN First Division South players, while the other sub-union teams in the Ebbo Bastard Trophy are Southern KZN (Port Shepstone region), Zululand and Northern KZN.

Zululand use players from their Zululand Rhinos team, who play in the KZN Premier Division, while the Southern KZN team consists of players selected from the likes of KZN First Division South clubs, Port Shepstone and Amanzimtoti.

The Northern KZN team is largely made up of players from the KZN First Division North clubs, such as Newcastle, Vryheid and Ladysmith.

At the conclusion of the Ebbo Bastard Trophy, which is played on a league-format system with standings based on points scored, a KZN Wildebeest XV is selected, which takes part in the annual South African interprovincial tournament for this level of the game.
