Plumtree names Deysel captain

2012-08-09 00:00

CENTRE Paul Jordaan is the only Sharks survivor from the line-up that started the Super Rugby final who has been slected for Saturday’s Currie Cup opener against Western Province at Newlands.

Coach John Plumtree, missing a dozen players, has opted to rest three others in Louis Ludik, Charl McLeod and Anton Bresler.

The seven replacements in Hamilton last Saturday have, however, been selected, with flank Jean Deysel taking over the captaincy and Riaan Viljoen filling the gap left by Frenchman Freddie Michalak at flyhalf. Meyer Bosman will partner Jordaan in midfield, Springbok Odwa Ndungane is on the wing and Cobus Reinach takes over at scrumhalf from McLeod.

Wiehahn Herbst and Craig Burden join Dale Chadwick in the front-row, while the experienced Steven Sykes locks the scrum with Jandre Marais. Veteran flank Jacques Botes is alongside Deysel and Tera Mtembu in the backrow.

In spite of the loss of 14 players to the Boks, overseas contracts and injury, Plumtree has named a fairly experienced team, with only Rosko Specman, on the bench, yet to see Currie Cup or Super Rugby action for the Sharks.

Western Province are missing eight regulars for this clash. Province have six players — backs Bryan Habana, Jean de Villiers and Juan de Jongh, the lock pairing of Andries Bekker and Eben Etzebeth, and flank Siya Kolisi — away with the Springboks, while flyhalf Peter Grant has returned to play club rugby in Japan and flank Rynhardt Elstadt is injured.

Still, they have 13 of their 22-man squad from the recent Super Rugby semi-final against the Sharks available, with Deon Fourie, on the flank, taking over the captaincy from De Villiers.
