Pmb Rotary: New president inducted

2011-07-05 00:00

SABITHA Maharaj was inducted as the new president of the Pietermaritzburg Rotary Club during a dinner held at the Maritzburg Golf Club.

Maharaj announced that Rotary International’s theme for the coming year is “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity”.

She reminded the members that Rotary is about “service above self” and that the club will continue to reach out to the local community through its various projects.

Outgoing president Richard Paine said 2010/11 year has been a really good year and that the club has become “bigger, better and bolder”.

The Paine family has collectively served Pietermaritzburg Rotary for some 85 years since Richard Paine, a local vet, joined in 1938, 13 years after the club’s establishment.

His son, Barrie, joined in 1946 and served until being made an honorary Rotarian status.

Barrie Paine had a strong interest in the scouting movement and was involved in their annual camping competition, affectionately known as “Ruck Sack”. Now aged 90, he still attends occasional Rotary meetings.

His son Richard joined Rotary in 2005 while his son, also a Richard, but known as Richie, became a Rotarian in 2010.
