Pmb local history website launches today

2010-02-04 00:00

TODAY sees the launch of the free Pietermaritzburg local history website. The website provides access to the local community history of Pietermaritzburg and its surrounding areas, and content includes information dating to the pre-settlement and post-apartheid eras, as well as information on prominent people linked to the area, including Mahatma Gandhi and former president Nelson Mandela.

The book, Pietermaritzburg 1838-1988: A New Portrait Of An African City, edited by John Laband and Robert Haswell, provides the foundation for the website. The book was published in 1988 and is now out of print.

Its content is available on The Witness Pietermaritzburg local history website by kind permission of the joint publishers, University of Natal Press and Shuter and Shooter.

The website has photographs and material documenting the change in the physical environment — both the natural landscape and the buildings — and how they have evolved.

Also included are sections on the history of services, business and various sectors of faith.

The website, hosted by The Witness editorial team, will offer popular series from the newspaper’s archives, including “The Way We Were” — a collection of local history stories.

The link to the website is available via www.witness.co.za
