Poky sow stalls to be phased out in SA

2011-10-06 00:00

SOW stalls for breeding pigs are likely to be phased-out in South Africa by 2020, Compassion in the World Farming said in a statement yesterday.

The sow stalls are narrow metal cages in which breeding sows are confined.

The stalls are so narrow the sow can only stand up or lie down with difficulty.

This is already illegal in many countries.

The organisation said they anticipate the confirmation of the date of phase-out to be by the end of November this year.

There are about 103 000 breeding sows confined in sow stalls in South Africa.

South Africa’s Compassion in World Farming has been at the forefront of the bid to phase out sow stalls.

Earlier this year they brought their complaint before Consumer Commissioner Mamadupi Mohlala, describing the sow stalls as unconscionable.

James Jenkinson of the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (SAPPO) told South Africa’s Compassion in World Farming that the matter had been discussed at their general meeting last month and several dates were discussed as the phase out period, including 2020.
