Police arrest seven for peddling drugs on the coast

2012-11-13 00:00

SOUTH Coast police struck several blows against drug-dealing in the area over the weekend, arresting seven people in separate incidents.

In one, three men were arrested with drugs worth R30 000 and appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Dwayne Lubbe (24), from Marburg, and Henry Simpiwe Mboyi (28) and Sibusiso Wiseman Jula (29), both of Bhoboyi, were remanded in custody.

The matter was adjourned to next week for a bail application.

The men were nabbed when public order policing officers Warrant Officer Patrick Gosling, Constable Travis Dickens and Constable Raphael Smithwick intercepted a bakkie on the main South Coast Road in Umtentweni at about 2 pm on Saturday.

“The occupants of the vehicle were found to be in possession of seven hundred straws of heroin with [an estimated] street value of R26 500,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

A sum of R2 773 in cash was also confiscated, along with a plastic bag with mandrax worth an estimated R1 225, which the men had thrown into a bush when they spotted the police vehicle.

“The accused purchased the drugs in Durban to be sold on the South Coast area,” said Wiid.

Warrant Officer Gosling and his team were commended by Port Shepstone cluster commander Major General Frank Holloway for their work in making a dent in the drug trade on the South Coast.

Also on Saturday, four people were arrested in separate busts during which officers recovered cash and cocaine. The four were arrested in the Umzinto and Esperanza areas.

Operations were conducted by officers from the Scottburgh crime intelligence unit, Durban narcotics team and the Scottburgh task team.

In one bust, 80 grams of pure cocaine, four large pieces of rock cocaine, 500 empty straws, a measuring scale and a sealer were confiscated at Esperanza and two people (aged 36 and 28) were arrested.

The street value of the drugs is an estimated R80 000.

A 23-year-old woman was arrested in Umzinto with 10 straws of heroin worth some R300 and, in another operation, a 26-year-old man was arrested in Umzinto with 28 straws of heroin worth about R840.

The four will appear in court this week.
