Police divers retrieve bloody cow hide from river

2010-08-30 00:00

POLICE and paramedics rushed to Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg after two men were seen throwing a suspiciously large bag into the river yesterday afternoon.

Police divers retrieved the bag and found a black cowhide weighted with a big rock.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the skin looked like it was from a freshly slaughtered cow.

A large crowd of people watched as two police divers retrieved the bag, while paramedics stood by.

Precious Mazokera said she called police after she saw two men throw the heavy bag into the water after taking it from the boot of a car with Estcourt number plates.

“They rolled it and struggled to carry it into the river. They then pushed it in,” she said.

“It did not come to my mind that it was a dead person they were sinking, but I strongly suspected them. People should not throw things into the river instead of taking them to a dumping site,” she said.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said police suspect that the skin was from a stolen cow.

“Why would people take time to cover a rock with the cowhide and throw it into the river?” said Jeevan.
