Police dog brings down drug dealer

2010-12-10 00:00

A NIGERIAN drug dealer was arrested in Ramsgate yesterday after an undercover police operation saw the man sell R800 worth of drugs to police officers.

The sting was carried out at about 9.45 am yesterday by detective warrant officers Koos Prinsloo, Abraham Sonnekus and Leon le Roux from the DPCI organised crime unit in Port Shepstone.

They were assisted by Sergeant Zane Moodley and his patrol dog, Baxter.

An undercover agent bought Ecstasy and crack cocaine from the dealer.

The suspect, who was sitting in his vehicle, a white BMW, then spotted the other police officers and sped off.

He travelled at high speed towards Margate, ignoring the heavy traffic flow, with the police in pursuit.

At the traffic light intersection next to the Margate police station, he crashed into a silver Mercedes Benz driven by Barbara Wicks.

Wicks was not injured but suffered from shock.

The suspect jumped out of his vehicle and ran off.

Moodley released Baxter and the dog brought the suspect to the ground.

The suspect, who has previous convictions for dealing in drugs, will face another charge of dealing in drugs, as well as one for reckless and negligent driving.
