Police move fast to catch killers

2008-08-11 00:00

Two women were stabbed to death and a third was raped in Port Shepstone during the early hours of Sunday morning.

However, police moved fast to arrest four of the five suspects, who were wearing bloodstained clothes.

The four were also found in possession of goods allegedly stolen from the victims.

The two deceased, Jabu Dlamini (44) and Bonele Cele, and three other people were fast asleep when five men burst into the house. They stabbed all five occupants of the house, and raped one of them.

Dlamini died at the scene. Cele managed to escape, but was found dead a short distance from the scene.

Samson Mkhize (42) was treated in hospital and released, but Gladys Nyawose (62) is still fighting for her life in hospital.

Another 46-year-old woman, who was treated in hospital and released, was stabbed and raped.

Two members of the police Dog Unit, who were called to the scene, arrested three of the suspected attackers in a local house. A fourth suspect was arrested later, while the last one is still at large.

The arrested suspects appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court in connection with charges of murder, rape and robbery yesterday.

In a separate incident, a man was arrested in the same area last week. He was found in possession of a 9 mm firearm allegedly stolen from a police officer’s house.

Clothes, a DVD player and a cellphone, which were allegedly stolen from the police officer’s house, were also found on the man.

He faces charges of housebreaking and possession of a firearm without a licence.
