Police officer praised for work

2013-07-03 00:00

A MOTHER who was reunited with her lost child heaped praise on the policeman who went out of his way to find the boy.

Nokuphiwa Kunene met Pietermaritzburg dog unit Sergeant Fazel Ebrahim at the K9 Unit in Pietermaritzburg yesterday and thanked him for finding her son, Smangaliso (7).

Kunene told The Witness she had been in Impendle with a friend when she received a call that her son was missing from her home at Oribi Village.

She said she had rushed back, alerting police on the way that her son was missing.

In her meeting with K9 unit commander Brian Oberholzer and Ebrahim, she expressed her disappointment at the treatment she received at Alexandra Road police station after her child was found and brought to the station.

He later went missing for a second time — from the police station.

Kunene said police seemed not to care that the child went missing while he was supposed to be in their care.

She said she wanted to walk the streets to look for her son. When Ebrahim heard about the situation, he made enquiries at the police station and left.

On his way into town he heard on the radio that a child had been found in Church Street. He went to the Pietermaritzburg police station and the child fitted the description he had for the missing boy. He then reunited the child with the family.

Kunene said, “In a few minutes he came back with my child. I am happy my child is back, and police like Ebrahim need to be praised for their good work.”

Oberholzer said Ebrahim was a dedicated and compassionate member of the team, who needed to be recognised. He suggested Kunene write a letter to be put into Ebrahim’s file. “I am happy that he was there to console you and bring a happy ending,” said Oberholzer.
