Police seize R712?000 of mandrax

2013-07-01 00:00

POLICE confiscated nearly R1 million worth of mandrax tablets from a house in Sydenham Heights, Durban, as part of an effort to get closer to the distributors of this highly addictive drug, on Friday.

Led by the kwaDukuza Cluster Task Team in conjunction with the National Intervention Unit, police recovered 8 909 mandrax tablets with a street value of R712 000 and arrested a suspect. The house had been under surveillance for two days before it was stormed at about midday on Friday. People in the house were selling wholesale and individual tablets and may be part of a wider distribution network. More arrests are likely.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said an 18-year-old man was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs.

“The drugs that were seized have been sent to forensics for analysis. The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court [today] facing charges of dealing in drugs,” said Zwane.

The kwaDukuza Cluster is led by Brigadier Derek Captain-Hastibeer. In December 2012, he was the recipient of a special award at the kwaDukuza mayoral awards ceremony for his efforts in fighting crime.

Since he was placed in charge of the unit in 2011, it has arrested various drug dealers and confiscated over R2 million worth of drugs, including crack cocaine, mandrax and ecstasy.
