Police surprise suspects at home

2012-09-17 00:00

THE SA Police Service arrested three suspects on Saturday for the murder of an Nqutu induna outside his home last month.

According to a police statement a joint team of Ulundi and Newcastle public order police waited in the early hours of the morning for the suspects to return to their homestead in the Qhudeni area.

Four brothers aged between 28 and 38 years old were arrested and found in possession of an AK47, a .303 rifle and a pistol believed to have been used in the murder.

Police spokesperson Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the suspects were “surprised” to find the police waiting for them.

“We had received information that the suspects were armed. The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing. A fourth suspect managed to escape. Police are confident that the outstanding suspect will be arrested soon,” said Mdunge.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Nqutu Magistrate’s Court today.

On August 30 Mlaleleni Sandlesibi Sithole (53), of Qhudeni, was at his homestead with his family when four suspects arrived and opened fire, killing him. His two sons were wounded during the attack and were taken to hospital for treatment. A case of murder and two counts of attempted murder were opened. The motive for the attack is believed to be a family-related dispute.
